January 2020 - Current
DIRECTOR, JOAL CONSULTING
I have recently established Joal in a complementary role to Themba, my goal being to facilitate the development of one-on-one relationships, particularly in the context of mentorship, whilst providing an exemplary level of structural and business expertise to, and in association with, other specialist disciplines. My scope of services encompasses the mentoring of emerging practices and the provision of expert witness services.
November 1994 - Current
MANAGING DIRECTOR, THEMBA CONSULTANTS
In 1994 I became founding partner in Themba being joined shortly thereafter by Malcolm Dold and, our current Chairman, Boyiki Dube. Over the past 25 years Themba has consistently provided the highest level of consulting services. In addition to my role as Structural Head I've been responsible for management and growth of the company. Milestones have included the successful implementation of our ISO 9001 based QMS and the attainment of Level 1 BBBEE.
January 1992- February 1997
DIRECTOR, CPDI
I headed the Engineering Disciplines (Civil, Structural, Electrical and Mechanical) in a consortium, Consulting Projects and Development, comprising HKS Law Gibb and independent Project Managers, Architects and Quantity Surveyors. Our objective was to provide a full spectrum of Built Environment services, as a single offering, beyond South Africa’s borders. We were successful in pursuing projects in Mozambique, Angola, and Zambia.
October 1983 - October 1994
DIRECTOR, HKS LAW GIBB
In 1983 I joined HKS (subsequently Gibb) as a Senior Engineer and later Structural Department Head in Johannesburg. Promoted to Associate, Executive Partner and finally National Director whilst with the company I became responsible for all building services engineering (structural, electrical and mechanical) in the Transvaal region as well as National Head of the Structural Division. In that role I was responsible for the development of the practice Structural Division QMS.
November 1981 - September 1983
SENIOR ENGINEER, MCB

On joining Mackenzie Cairns and Bothma in 1981 I moved to specialise in reinforced concrete framed commercial buildings and mining (surface) works. Whilst at MCB I became responsible for a team of technicians and support staff and was involved in the early adoption of computer aided design by the practice. During this period I qualified as both a Chartered Engineer (UK) and Professional Engineer (RSA)
June 1979 - October 1981
ENGINEER, JEC FAIRBROTHER & PARTNERS
Upon graduation I joined JEC Fairbrother and Partners at their offices in Birmingham in the UK. My first two years of experience were under the mentorship of Professor John Nolan (subsequently a President of The Institution of Structural Engineers and Chair of the Construction Industry Council (UK).
My early training was focused primarily on steel framed multi-storey buildings but I also received extensive exposure to structural masonry and timber.
